Less friction translates to more horsepower to the rear wheel and the X-ring does a better job than any O-ring in keeping lubrication on the inside and abrasive dirt\/water on the outside. Ultimately this improves the longevity of the chain. The use modern steel alloys has allowed engineers to design a lighter built; but still offer a strong chain; for an excellent weight-strength ratio and shock resistance.
